While Lars Hedenborg no longer “unlocks doors” for buyers or goes on listing appointments, he has had his share of stress over the years. Hedenborg worked long hours including nights, weekends and during vacations while sacrificing valuable family time and not getting ahead financially as much as he wanted. It was “Groundhog Day” every single day.
After five years of running hard on the real estate transaction treadmill, he knew something had to change. In 2012 he shifted his focus from top producer to team leader and business coach, and started a real estate business coaching company in 2013 to help top agents and team leaders scale their real estate businesses without giving their lives away in the process.
Hedenborg had been casually watching eXp Realty for years and noticed that eXp became one of the top brokerages in his market of Charlotte, North Carolina, where he said it is “selling a ton of real estate and disrupting the industry.”
It wasn’t until a respected colleague, friend and past coaching client John Mikesh joined eXp that Hedenborg knew it was time. “I know John personally and as a business owner. He’s built a solid real estate team and at his core, he wants to help people,” said Hedenborg, who joined Mikesh at eXp in September 2020.
“I’m not the first adopter of anything,” said Hedenborg. “I like to see how things play out before I jump in. Most everything in our industry is hyped up. But eXp finally got to the point where I couldn’t deny that ‘this thing is really happening!’”
His focus is now on growth and attraction for eXp. “Real estate is fun again,” said Hedenborg. “I think it’s unbelievably awesome to be part of this company and its international expansion. This is the Netflix of real estate and we are just getting started!”
Since he started in 2007, Hedenborg and his team have served more than 4,000 families for over $1 billion in sales volume. He is now dedicating his time and talents to helping others realize the massive opportunity at eXp.

Why did you join eXp?
“I was closed off to eXp for many years. I never took the time to study it. I pride myself on not chasing squirrels so I kept my head down and focused on my real estate team and coaching business while others joined the party! The disruption that eXp is causing in the industry cannot be ignored at this point. Just like Blockbuster publicly dismissed Netflix in 2008, I experienced firsthand key leaders in our industry dismiss eXp. There has never been a platform that provides so much value to agents in terms of technology, training and community. In addition, the ability to earn stock and build revenue share will provide an exit strategy to many agents who would not be able to gracefully retire otherwise. I am beyond excited for the future now that my feet are on the ground. The best is yet to come for those that open their eyes and mind to this special opportunity.”
What makes eXp special to you?
“First and foremost, it is hands down the best place to practice real estate. There’s no politics with Market Center leaders or the drama that comes along with office gossip. It’s a community of like-minded professionals that see the world a bit differently and are happy to be part of the change that is so needed in real estate.
“Top agents collaborate with each other and give away their best stuff, it’s awesome. On top of that, the stock potential and revenue share is available for those that are willing to work hard, sell a lot of homes and talk to other agents about real estate being fun again. The technology, training and collaboration are unlike anything in our industry. Period.”
Is there a significant experience you can share since you joined eXp?
“Everyone has been so friendly and giving of their time. From the highest leaders of the company to everyone involved in helping me and those that are joining my transition over. The coordination with state brokers through Workplace has been awesome as well. I think the fear with a virtual brokerage is lack of responsiveness but I have to say, everyone is more on top of things than any other brokerage I’ve been involved with.”
What is one thing about eXp that surprised you?
“It’s definitely the support I am getting from the leaders in the company including Gene Frederick, Brent Gove, Dave Conord, Cliff Freeman, AJ Mida and my sponsor John Mikesh. Real estate has typically been such a dog-eat-dog sort of world. In eXp, other agents want to see you win in your business and with revenue share. eXp is doing everything it can to help us succeed.”
What kind of collaboration have you experienced at eXp?
“My sponsor John Mikesh has given me so much confidence and support to be able to introduce eXp to those I know. There is never a question he can’t answer or track down the answer to. He holds weekly training calls on revenue share.”
Best tip to share with other agents:
“Always think in terms of leverage. Ask yourself: ‘Is what you are doing now the very best use of my time and is it going to help me make the kind of money I want in real estate?’”
