Some families pass down heirlooms. The Slocums pass down keys. For 76 years, the Slocum name has been part of Rhode Island’s story of homeownership, spanning three generations and thousands of closings. What began in 1949 as a neighborhood business has grown into a dynasty that set the standard for success. And now, this Rhode Island real estate dynasty just went global with eXp Realty (read the press release here).
How the Slocums Became Rhode Island Royalty
Postwar America was booming. Veterans were coming home, the baby boom was reshaping communities, and homeownership was quickly becoming the new American dream. Against that backdrop, George Slocum opened his office in Warwick in 1949 — the first chapter of a legacy that would carry his family name for generations.

From a national franchise in 1978 to reclaiming independence in the ’90s, the Slocum name has always found ways to evolve. When the third generation stepped in by 2006, they pushed the business into the modern era with fresh vision and momentum. By 2021, the team was pioneering a teamerage model. Today, they’re stepping onto the global stage with eXp Realty.
Carrying the American Dream Forward
For the Slocums, they are intent on keeping the American dream alive. They have built their reputation on serving families at every stage, whether it is handing over keys to a $150,000 mobile home or marketing a multi-million-dollar waterfront estate. The promise never changes.
In the past 12 months, The Slocum Home Team has helped more than 249 families buy or sell their homes. That level of success has made them one of Rhode Island’s top performers and a trusted name for generations.
Inside their office, a simple phrase is displayed on the wall:
“Every home is someone’s castle, and every client deserves to be treated like gold.”
This is the standard Nick Slocum and his family have carried for 76 years and the reason thousands of Rhode Island families have trusted them with their most important milestone.
A Dynasty on the Move
With 30 agents and 7 staff, The Slocum Home Team stands as one of Rhode Island’s largest and most accomplished groups. In the past year, they represented more than $109 million in sales volume and earned a place on America’s Best Real Estate Professionals list by Real Trends and Tom Ferry for seven consecutive years.
“The numbers and awards matter, but what matters most is the trust families place in us,” Nick says. That trust has also brought personal recognition, including being named REALTOR® of the Year in 2024 from the Kent Washington Association of REALTORS® ️ and being honored on Providence Business News’ 40 Under Forty in 2023.

Yet even with the accolades, Nick and his partners knew the industry was shifting. Momentum alone would not future-proof their agents. The question became clear: how do you take a 76-year legacy and position it for the next era of real estate?

Why eXp, Why Now
The search for that answer began at a dinner table. While meeting with colleagues from the Zillow Agent Advisory Board — Kristina Salcido, Joe Oz, and Abel Gilbert — Nick Slocum asked deeper questions about eXp. He had followed the company’s growth for years, but hearing directly from respected peers gave him a closer look at the Fast Forward Movement, a mastermind of top-performing teams inside eXp built on collaboration and shared playbooks.
“My business partner Jon and I kept asking ourselves, is everybody really this open and supportive?” Nick recalls.
“We looked for holes, for reasons why this might not be the right fit. But this time, we couldn’t find them.”
The more they explored, the more convinced they became. A turning point came when Nick connected with eXp CEO Leo Pareja. “Leo isn’t just a corporate executive. He built one of the top teams in the country and knows exactly what it feels like to be in the trenches. Having someone at the helm who has been in our shoes is immensely valuable.”

For Nick, the decision ultimately came down to people and future. eXp provided what they could never replicate as an independent brokerage: technology at scale, elite masterminds, wealth-building opportunities through stock awards and revenue share, and a culture that rewards collaboration. “Agents here aren’t just selling homes. They can build equity, passive income streams, and plug into a community where iron sharpens iron.”
When the move was presented to the team, the response was immediate. Every single agent signed on without hesitation — one hundred percent buy-in. “To me, that was astounding and a real testament to the trust our agents place in us as leaders,” Nick says. “It’s also a testament to eXp’s onboarding team, especially Robin Sobczak, who did an outstanding job helping our agents clearly see the upside of this transition.”
Hitting the Ground Running
From the start, the move to eXp delivered momentum.
“That is the kind of actionable impact this platform delivers,” Nick says. “Our agents not only have access to world-class training, they are already putting it into practice and seeing results.”
For the Slocums, the shift is about focus: supporting agents, growing businesses, and creating opportunity for families.
“Serving families in Rhode Island and Southern New England will always be our foundation,” Nick says. “But now our agents have a bigger platform, a larger toolbox, and a network that spans the globe.”
Seventy-six years after George Slocum first opened his office in Warwick, the dynasty continues. The American dream is still their mission, and now the stage is bigger. And while some families may pass down heirlooms, the Slocums will keep passing down keys.
