Fresno Top Producer Marie Meza Leaves REAL Brokerage for eXp Realty

After working inside both cloud-based models, the longtime Fresno Realtor says agents should not assume the brokerages offer the same experience.

The Fresno real estate market just saw a massive shift. Local industry icon Marie Meza and the Marie Meza Team have officially left REAL Brokerage to join eXp Realty.

Here is the inside scoop on the move, the casual lunch that started it all, and what this means for the Central Valley real estate scene.

The Casual Lunch That Changed Everything

Before her move to eXp Realty, Marie wasn’t actively looking for a change. She had chosen REAL Brokerage for its capping structure and was focused on running her busy team specializing in residential sales, flips, and investor portfolios. That changed at a lunch with Realtor friend Steven Diaz and a few of her other friends.

“It all started with a simple conversation,” she confesses. “I shared some of the challenges and unmet expectations I was experiencing in my business, along with my desire for growth and something more.”

What began as one informal conversation developed into a serious evaluation of eXp.

“I found myself taking a closer look at my business and the experience I wanted for both myself and my sales team,” she says. “The conversation was eye-opening. It gave me clarity around what I truly wanted: a culture of collaboration, leadership, support, greater opportunities, energy, and an environment where my team and I could thrive.”

Are REAL Brokerage and eXp Really the Same?

Marie’s move challenges the common perception that cloud-based brokerages are largely interchangeable.

“It’s not about the sign on the building. It’s the value that you find inside,” Marie explains. “You need to evaluate what you desire, narrow it down by the model and culture, and find those who will support, energize, and strive to grow with you.”

She encourages agents comparing the two models to look beyond caps, splits, and the absence of traditional offices. Instead, they should ask detailed questions about the support they will actually receive, leadership accessibility, training, accountability, and how agents collaborate behind the scenes.

“Gather your questions, and even your misconceptions,” Marie says. “Have detailed conversations about what will actually be provided, what the support systems look like, and how success is measured.”

The Brokerage Wish List Has Changed

Five or 10 years ago, an attractive split and cap could carry much more of the brokerage conversation. In 2026, Marie believes agents are looking much deeper into what happens after they sign.

They want collaboration, transparent conversations, modern systems, better technology, and support that leaves room for them to develop their own style and brand. For Marie, the biggest deciding factor is the people surrounding the model.

“Receiving inquisitive questions, genuine care and concern from others, and people digging to know more and understand how they can help is admirable, welcomed, and priceless,” she says. “I have never experienced this before to this level.”

That experience changed the way she evaluates a brokerage. The best split may grab an agent’s attention, but the ability to build a stronger business can have a much larger long-term impact.

“You don’t know until you know,” Marie says. “You can imagine that something exists, but when you see it, it’s surprising.”

She also knows how easy it is for successful agents to become accustomed to gaps in their businesses. Daily responsibilities take over, familiar frustrations begin to feel normal, and exploring another company gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

“Switching brokerages isn’t fun. It’s work,” Marie says. “But if it’s the right move, the return can far outweigh the temporary inconvenience. The right environment will save you time, increase your income, and provide the support and opportunities you didn’t realize you were missing.”

Her advice to other independent contractors is to take a step back, have the conversations, and evaluate whether their current brokerage still supports the business they want to build.

What Comes Next for the Marie Meza Team

Marie arrives at eXp after spending more than 15 years ranked among Fresno County’s top 100 Realtors. She is joined by six licensed agents and one support staff member.

Now, she is preparing her team for a Central Valley market she describes as more competitive and challenging than it has been in years. Through eXp, the team will have access to agents across the country who are openly sharing the systems, technology, and strategies producing results in their own markets.

Marie says her agents have already gained an additional layer of support, while she has found people invested in helping her navigate her role as team leader.

“We are very excited to be here,” she says. “One thing I learned through this experience is that you never know who may be open to a conversation, or how a simple, genuine discussion can impact someone’s perspective and future. Sometimes the most meaningful opportunities begin not with a sales pitch, but with authentic relationships and a willingness to listen.”

With more than 1,400 sales, Marie and her team have already established themselves as a major presence in Fresno real estate. This next chapter gives their business more support, more connections, and even more room to grow.
