When Everyone Knows You as Mom, Who Sees Your Dreams?
This Diwali, eXp Realty’s Falguni Shah reflects on the ambitions women put aside, the people behind the roles, and making room for a new beginning.
A mother can become so familiar in the role of caring for everyone else that we stop wondering what she wants for herself. We ask about her children. We count on her help. How often do we ask about the career she put on hold, the interests she wants to pursue, or the future she imagines?
Florida eXp Realty agent Falguni Shah knows the societal expectations that can come with being a mother, including the pressure to make room for everyone else’s needs while finding somewhere to fit her own ambitions.
Before real estate, she had built a career supporting other families. After moving from India to the United States, she earned a master’s degree in educational psychology and worked as an early interventionist, helping young children with special needs and their parents navigate some of their most challenging years.
Then she stepped back from her career to focus on her own family. Over time, she began considering what a return to professional life could look like.
“As a South Asian woman, wife, and mother, I experienced the reality many women face—balancing family expectations, motherhood, and professional ambitions,” she says.
“I stepped back from my career to prioritize my family, but along the way, I realized that a woman's dreams and identity deserve space alongside her responsibilities.”
For Falguni, real estate became a way to give those dreams room. And this Diwali, a season she associates with hope and new beginnings, her experience invites a question that reaches beyond motherhood: When was the last time you looked at someone beyond the role you know them for?
Seeing the Person Behind the Home Search
Falguni had practiced asking that question in her earlier career. Supporting children with special needs also meant understanding the parents caring for them. They had jobs to manage, households to run, and worries that continued long after an appointment ended. She learned to adjust her support around the lives they were actually living.
Reflecting on one family she worked with, she says, “Their journey taught me that behind every challenge is a human story, and sometimes the greatest service we can offer is simply showing up with empathy, patience, and a willingness to understand.”
That perspective carries into real estate. A client’s wish list might tell you how many bedrooms they need. Understanding what the move means to them reveals something about the future they imagine.
A first home could represent years of saving. An extra bedroom could make it possible to care for an aging parent. A move closer to family could give an overwhelmed household the support it needs.
For agents, those possibilities are reasons to ask questions and listen carefully. Just as a mother has ambitions beyond her responsibilities, a buyer has a life beyond the transaction. Understanding more of that life can help an agent recognize what matters most.
Finding Community Through the Traditions She Kept
As Falguni rebuilt her professional life, the traditions she brought from India helped her connect with people in Florida.
She grew up in Gujarat in a Gujarati Brahmin family where faith, customs, and service were woven into everyday life. After moving to the United States, she wanted her children to experience the celebrations and sense of belonging she had known growing up.
Her involvement eventually extended beyond her own family. Serving on the board of a Central Florida nonprofit, she helped bring people together through Holi, Diwali, Janmashtami, Navratri, musical evenings, children’s events, and senior programs.
Those gatherings gave people a chance to know her through shared experiences. They also helped her appreciate how much her cultural background contributed to the relationships she was building.
When eXp expanded into India, she saw an opportunity to connect her Indian roots with her professional life in the United States and help people explore real estate opportunities across borders.
“That journey transformed my identity from a local Realtor to a community Realtor and, eventually, a global Realtor.”
Today, she serves as co-chair of the eXp South Asian Network, bringing her experience in community involvement and cultural understanding to her work with fellow agents.
A Diwali Reminder That New Beginnings Are Still Possible
For Falguni, Diwali is a time to gather with family, celebrate traditions, and share their meaning with her children. The festival’s themes of light overcoming darkness and the possibility of renewal also reflect lessons from her own life.
“As a woman, a mother, and a professional who has navigated different chapters of life, I have learned that new beginnings often emerge from our most challenging moments.”
She wants her children to understand the kindness, courage, gratitude, and hope represented by the lights they place in their home. Her reflections on the holiday leave room for setbacks and the perseverance it can take to begin again.
Her own new beginning drew on experiences she already had: the education she pursued, the families she supported, and the community she helped bring together. Real estate gave her another place to use those abilities while pursuing ambitions of her own.
This Diwali, her story offers a reason to ask the mothers and caregivers in our lives about their futures, too. A career they want to return to, an interest they want to explore, or a goal they have set aside deserves a place in the conversation. Sometimes, seeing someone more fully begins by asking what they want next.
