With some of the world’s best golf courses, retirement communities and a military base in their territory, Towering Pines Real Estate has developed a powerhouse business helping clients buy and sell properties in the Pinehurst / Southern Pines / Fayetteville area of central North Carolina.
But where does an independent real estate brokerage go when its owners need to take their business to the next level?
For Allan and Terry Nanney, the answer was clear. On March 1, the Nanneys moved their 23-member Towering Pines Real Estate team to eXp Realty. Other brokerages had tried to recruit them, but no other franchise model was appealing.
“We were not actively seeking to make a change but, rather, to stay informed about the evolution of the different business models in the industry and how our company needed to evolve to compete for talent,’’ Allan said, adding:
“The interest in eXp started as just wanting to know more about our competition, then grew as we realized we did not want to compete against the eXp model but compete with that model on our side.’’

The More You Know, The More Powerful eXp Delivers
Allan is a keen analyst of business and finance. Before starting Towering Pines with Terry in 2013, he spent 15 years as a senior-level financial executive in various industries and another almost-decade with Keller Williams. He’s a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Terry has 20 years of real estate experience, coming after a prior career in customer service.
“Between the two of us, we had a lot of experience with different franchise models, and we had operated as an independent company for 10 years. That, combined with our prior work in financial management, planning, and consulting, has given us a unique experience and perspective,’’ he said.
Having earned GRI, CSP, SFR, and CDPE designations, Allan is a firm believer that excellence starts with a learning-based mindset. He devotes a significant amount of time teaching and coaching agents at all levels of experience and/or achievement. Terry has earned the SRES and C2EX designations, and they both wanted the brokerage they joined to have the same values and offerings.
“Our mission has always been to provide the environment where our agents could become the best version of themselves,’’ Terry said, adding: “The more we looked at eXp, the more clear it became that the eXp model was the answer to that question. It’s not just one thing about eXp that is better and different than what was available to us before — it’s everything.”
Learn More About Allan and Terry Nanney:
How did you learn about eXp?
“Our introduction to eXp on a personal level actually came a couple of years ago when a great friend, coach and advisor moved to eXp. George Kolar, who leads The Platinum Group in Chicago, made the actual introduction to us and is our sponsor.”
What are your impressions of eXp so far?
“Other companies talk about this program, or that perceived advantage, or their culture, or whatever. This has been the most genuine experience of delivering on a promise that I have seen in 39 years as a real estate professional.
The onboarding has been impressively comprehensive and the support staff we have dealt with has been phenomenal. Before we made the move, we looked for pros and cons, and the only “con” was a comment about “so much to learn.” We don’t see that as a “con.” To us it means ‘There is so much to learn because there are so many resources here and so much we can take advantage of.’ ‘’
Do you specialize in certain types of real estate?
“We are next door to both Pinehurst, the Cradle of American Golf, and to Fort Bragg, the largest military base in the United States. So we are a resort market, a retirement market, and a military market all at once.”
